EU could scrutinize steel exports from China

The Eurofer industrial group may ask the EU to impose taxes on steel bars imported from China. All this because of the alleged unfair tariffs. This fact threatens to increase the steel trade tensions between Europe and China.

„Eurofer is absolutely determined to act. Because sales from China in the 28 EU states would be below the cost price. Being a practice known as dumping”. Said Karl Tachelet, director of international affairs – Eurofer.

Almost all imports, which are made in Europe, of metal reinforcements – steel bars used in reinforced concrete – go to Great Britain, shipments from China reached a market share of 20% in 2014, increasing from zero in 2012 , reaching a peak of 36% in the second quarter of this year, Eurofer said.

„The Eurofer industrial group will decide in the first quarter of 2015 whether to file a dumping complaint. To the European Commission or what alternative action will it take,” said Tachelet. The Commission is the trade authority of the EU.

Eurofer, which managed to get the Commission to examine this year the alleged dumping in the EU of cold-rolled stainless steel products from China and Taiwan, says that the European steel industry is losing market share to suppliers outside the continent. While imports of finished steel increased by 22% in the first three quarters of 2014, domestic deliveries increased by about 1.5%.
