Tata Steel unveils a sustainable steel production technology in Europe

Tata Steel has announced a new sustainable technology to remove half of the amount of CO2 released during steel manufacturing. According to the tests carried out at the factory in IJmuiden – Holland.

The HIsarna technology for iron production is based on a reactor in which iron ore is injected in the upper part. The ore is liquefied at high temperature and dripped into the bottom of the reactor where powdered coal is injected.

„The results show that we can make a significant contribution to improving the sustainability of steel production with this technology developed by Tata Steel.” Hans Fischer, executive director of Tata Steel‘s European operations, said.

„The development of this technology supports our ambition to become a steel producing company that is sustainable from all points of view”, he declared.

The company claims that tests have shown that this technology can lead to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. Results from the steel production process. The next steps in testing the HIsarna facility include identifying the ideal mix of raw materials, investigating steel slag recycling options, testing the use of CO2 for raw material injection, investigating zinc recovery and studying the possibilities of CO2 capture and storage – to have the potential to reduce of traditional CO2 emissions from steel production by approximately 80%.

Around 75 million euros were invested in the development of HIsarna technology. Its name is an amalgam of the old Celtic word for iron (Isarna) and the name of the melting pot (Hismelt).
