Profile H versus profile I is the topic we propose in this article. For those who work in the construction industry and related fields, it is vital to understand these differences.
At first glance, these two steel profiles look similar, but there are some major differences that are essential to understand.
Within the H profiles we have:
HEA – H profile with light wings;
HEB – H profile with normal wings;
HEM – H profile with heavy wings.

And within profiles I we have:
INP – normal profile I;
IPE – economic profile I.
The two types of profiles have slightly different mechanical properties, such as strength-to-weight ratio, load capacity, tensile strength, etc.
A hot-rolled steel profile, for structural use, is characterized by two parameters of mechanical tensile strength: yield strength and tensile strength.
The cross-section of the H profiles is more optimized than that of the I, giving them a reasonable strength-to-weight ratio, i.e. they have more resistance per unit area. The larger surface area on the cross-section gives them this high resistance.
Weight
The average weight of an H profile is greater than that of an I profile, which means that it can withstand more forces, in specific applications.
Therefore, in applications where the weight and force on the walls is a problem, you should choose I profiles due to the fact that they are lighter. At the same time, an H profile supports higher loads than an I profile.
The Inp and Ipe profiles have a cross section height that is noticeably higher than the length of the wings.
For a Hea with a size of up to 300 mm, the height of the profile is smaller than the width of the wings. After this dimension, the height of the profile increases, while the width of the wings remains constant at 300 mm.
Up to the size of 300 mm, the HEB Europrofile is square because the height of the profile and the width of the wings are equal. As with the HEA profile, after this dimension, the height of the profile increases while the width of the wings remains constant at 300 mm. In the case of HEM profiles, the height is greater than the width of the wings.

Openings
H profiles can be used to obtain openings of up to 100 meters. While with the help of I profiles, you can get clearances that vary between 10 and 30 meters.
