Jewel Changi Airport in Singapore, built with the help of steel, between 2014 and 2019, is a multidimensional destination. The designers have reimagined the modern airport so that it stands out in the landscape of global airports.
Shopping, transit and dining areas are surrounded by lush vegetation, offering travelers a unique experience. The whole ensemble is fundamentally different from what we associate with the generic airport space.
Two essential elements, a waterfall and a forest, have transformed Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport into a destination in itself.
Inspired by the frequent rains in Singapore, the HSBC Rain Vortex is the highest artificial waterfall, with a height of 40 meters. The water flows, almost 38,000 liters of water per minute, through an oculus located in the roof of the building. At night the waterfall becomes a show of lights and sounds.
Shiseido Forest Valley brings together a vast collection of plants integrated into garden spaces. Over 120 species of large plants and 900 trees complete this magnificent space.
The shape of the building fits the programmatic need for multiple connections within the airport.
Crowned with a complex steel and glass roof, the construction of Jewel Changi Airport benefited from the most sophisticated production technologies.
The work of the architect Moshe Safdie is a glass and steel structure that allows the entire interior to be flooded with natural light.
The impressive multi-faceted steel and glass dome covers the spectacular indoor gardens at Singapore’s Changi Airport.
About 3,500 tons of steel were used for the steel structure of the airport.
The roof in the console is literally suspended in the air, being made of 5,000 nodes and 14,000 steel elements. It is supported on a perimeter ring beam and 14 tubular steel poles.
„The traditional mall component is combined with the experience of nature, culture, education and recreation, aiming to offer an uplifting experience. Attracting both visitors and local residents, we aim to create a place where the people of Singapore interact with the people of the world”, said Moshe Safdie.
