New manufacturing methods for stronger metals

Nature inspires new manufacturing methods by which metals become more resistant: „The presence of small particles on the surface of the metal makes it more resistant, but at the same time less ductile. But if we gradually increase the size of the particles inside the material, we can obtain a more ductile metal. You will see a similar variation in size. Also, the distribution of structures in a cross-section of a bone or a bamboo stem. In short, a gradual breaking surface of large and small particles makes the material stronger and more ductile, in a combination of characteristics not found in conventional materials” said Xiaoli Wu, professor of materials science at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Mechanics.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (ACS) has five sections (mathematics, physics, chemistry, earth sciences and technology). Also, eleven branches in Shenyang, Changchun, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan, Canton, Chengdu, Kunming, Xi’an, Lanzhou and Xinjiang. ACS also has 84 institutes, one university (China Science and Technology University in Hefei, Anhui), two colleges, four documentation and information centers. And three other technological support centers and two publishing units. These ACS branches and offices are located in twenty provinces and municipalities in China. ACS has invested in over four hundred and thirty companies with new manufacturing methods in eleven industries. Eight of these companies are listed on the stock exchange.
