The Armata tank will be equipped with a special steel alloy resistant to extremely low temperatures. It will be presented to the general public at the Victory Day anniversary parade in 2015.
Yevgeny Chistyakov, representative of the Steel Scientific Research Institute, said at the Interpolitech 2014 exhibition in Moscow that the new 44S-SV-SH steel armor does not lose its qualities and can operate at Arctic temperatures.
The Arctic may become a subject of dispute between the great powers over the energy resources under the melting ice. Russia already claims its rights for a significant part of these resources, its military presence in the region is continuously growing.
The advantage of the new Armata tank made of special steel alloy resistant is its light armor. The developers managed to increase the hardness of the steel while keeping its plasticity. This combination allows reducing the thickness of the armor by 15%, without reducing its safety characteristics. It is also planned that the new material will be used to upgrade existing military vehicles.
The Steel Scientific Research Institute stated that the new steel offers a high level of protection, thanks to its fine-grained structure, optimized alloying process and special heat treatment.
The purpose of the new armor is to protect the combat modules and optoelectronic devices. Also, the tank’s external equipment of small-caliber bullets and automatic missiles.
„Better steel alloying reduces friability, which is important for equipment operating in low temperature areas.” Says Mihail Timoshenko, the independent military expert, author of the book The Russian Army.
