Liberty Galati’s transition to green steel is an ambitious goal that the plant has set itself.
The Liberty Group acquired the plant in Galati, which is on the verge of survival, in July 2019. The group’s stated goal is to transform the plant into the most important regional producer of green steel. It is a commitment that spans 10 years and involves investments of 1 billion euros.

The pandemic period came with new challenges. However, Liberty Galati did not cease its operations or significantly reduce its activity during the pandemic. Efforts have been made to protect and maintain employees.
„When we bought the business, about 1.7 million tons were produced. Last year we had a record production of 2.1 million tons of raw metal, which means 2.35 million tons of steel. From 1.7 we have reached 2.35, which for blast furnaces is the highest production in its entire history. So I was very satisfied with the technical operational results of the business. „, says Sanjeev Gupta, owner of Liberty Galati.
„Last year’s record production is an important step in our mission to obtain not only higher volumes, but also quality steel, with a reduced carbon footprint”, said Prasanta Mishra, Executive Director of Liberty Galati.
The Liberty Galati combine has started the bidding process to buy new electric arc hybrid furnaces. Which represents a major step in fulfilling the vision of becoming neutral in carbon emissions by 2030.
The new technology will allow the steel production operations in Galati to have a more flexible supply mix. A flexible mixture of liquid cast iron, direct reduced iron (DRI/HBI) and scrap iron will be possible.
To support the decarbonization objective, Liberty Galati has already launched the first 50 MW phase of the 180 MW solar energy project carried out on the industrial platform, which will supply green energy directly to the steelworks.
„The new ovens will reduce carbon emissions by over 80% over time. Supporting our ambition to produce GREENSTEEL with a reduced carbon footprint at LIBERTY Galati”, declared the representatives of the combine.
