Laminor Hall – a benchmark of industrial design

After five years of restoration, consolidation and arrangement works, the Laminor Hall has re-entered the urban and social circuit of Bucharest.

Designed by one of the most famous Romanian architects, Horia Creanga, it is one of the largest industrial halls in the country, on a metal structure.

Built in 1938, the Laminor Hall was the last building in the „Malaxa” industrial complex.

This is where the N.Malaxa pipe factory operated, equipped with a 6-inch Stiefel rolling mill, a 14-inch rolling mill and a cold drawer. At that time they were the most modern in Europe.

The factory was one of the largest exporters of oil pipes during the communist period. In its heyday, it had over 10,000 employees.

Although during the communist period it had exported its products to all continents, the company could not cope with the transition to a market economy.

The „Malaxa” Factories Industrial Complex is probably the most important industrial group of interwar Romania. Being considered a reference in the category of industrial architecture, competing with the „Krupp” Plant.

The building remained standing in the face of a world war, the communist regime, but also the carelessness after 1990.

LAMINOR HALL – CHARACTERISTICS:

• surface of 68,000 square meters;
• the steel structure, executed at the Iron Works and the Resita Domains, was refurbished;
• restoration/development budget 400 million lei;
• the metal structure of the hall consisting of trusses with thin, riveted profiles;
• it has important glazed surfaces, which together with the skylights in the roof ensure optimal lighting.

The Laminor Hall is included by the Ministry of Culture and National Identity in the category of historical monuments, according to Law 422 of 2001.

Due to this fact, the original metal structure was preserved in the rehabilitation process. Also, for energy efficiency, new elements were introduced (walls and glazed roofs with thermal break).

Industrial metal sheds are usually designed to provide large open areas with few internal structural columns. They offer maximum flexibility in use and freedom of movement of machines inside the building.
